Fireside TONIGHT

After fasting last week (get it, no “Food for Thought”), here are some primers for tonight.

Looking Back:

What is the overall context of James 1:2-18?

What is the role of trials in the believer’s life?

What is so bad about being “double-minded”?  How does it affect a person?

Looking Forward:

How is James 1:9-12 related to the rest of 1:2-18?

What does James mean by “high position” (v. 9)?  What makes the position “high”?

Describe the fate of the rich man.  Why does James describe him this way?

Take a few minutes this afternoon to read over James 1:2-18 and chew on some of these questions, and we’ll see you tonight!

Man it’s hot!  Oh well, glad C-dub is air conditioned!

A few important upcoming dates:

10/1 (Today)- Fireside!
10/4- Beach Day @ Huntington Beach
-  I’ll have tickets tonight.  Bring your $5!
- The group going down to set up will look to be down there a little early to help with set up.  We’ll talk about this tonight!
- Event starts @ 2:30 and we’ll eat around 5:00.
- Don’t forget that parking will cost around $10, so each car (actually, the people in the car) needs to bring some cash!
10/5- Crossroads Prayer
- This is the one that I forgot to announce last week!
- We have the opportunity to come a little early (ok, maybe a lot early) and pray for the Crossroads ministry on Sunday morning.
- Meet in the Upper Room at 7:00 and we’ll ask that the Lord would bless the ministry and use it to glorify Himself!

Alright, on to some food . . .

Looking back on the overview of James:

What is the main point of James?

What are some of the major themes in the book?

Did thinking on the letter reveal any new insights over the last week?

Looking ahead to James 1:2-4:

What are some of the trials that you have experienced in your life?  Do these fall under the trials that James is talking about?

How do you typically react to trials?

What have these trials revealed about your faith?  How have they shaped you, particularly in your relationship with the Lord?

James says that perseverance built up in trials will do three things in our lives.  What are they?  How would you summarize them as a group?

See you all tonight!

Fireside TONIGHT

Last week we looked at 2 Peter 1:3-9 together, then we talked about wisdom at retreat.  This week we’re going to kick off James by, quite literally, taking a look at the whole book to pick out and consider its major thoughts and themes before we go at it piece by piece in the coming weeks.  Here are some primers for tonight’s discussion.

Looking back:

Particularly in light of what we talked about last week both in study and at retreat, what is the importance of the knowledge of God?

We touched on the thought that we need to grow in this knowledge.  How do we do that?
What is wisdom?  How are wisdom and knowing Christ related?

Looking forward:

When you think of James, what are some of your initial impressions?

Is there a central theme/thought in James?  If so, what is it?  If not, how should we understand it?

Is there “theology” in James?

We’ll see y’all tonight!

Hey everybody!

Just wanted to post a little reminder that we are meeting tonight 7:00 in the third floor lounge at Smith Hall (C-Dub).  We’ll spend some time discussing, singing, and even eating.  We’ll take a look at 2 Peter 1 to really set up our study of James which we’ll kick off next week.

Since we talked about coming to participate (not just to attend) last week here are a few things to think about as you come:

Looking back:

What role should Fireside (or whatever study you end up involved in) play in your week?

What are some of the things that Fireside should do to play that role?

How has God gifted you to serve His church?

What are you passionate to see God’s church doing?

Why has God put you here now?

Looking ahead:

Are you coming to retreat?  (The only correct answer to this question is “YES!  Of COURSE I’m coming to retreat!”)

What are some parallels between 2 Peter 1 and James?

How does 2 Peter 1 help us get ready to study James?

Hey everybody!

It was good to finally get things underway this Wednesday!  I really enjoyed meeting a number of you, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know everybody over the coming months as we team up in serving the Lord and one another.  (I also rather enjoyed the three cupcakes that I had to eat after study, thanks Lisa and Kellie!)

A couple of reminders . . .

Important dates coming up:

-          9/17- Week 2 of Fireside 08-09

o   7:00 pm

o   3rd floor lounge of CW Hall

-          9/19-21- Fireside (oh yeah, and CSUN will be there, too) Retreat

o   Camarillo, CA

o   Cost: $40/student, $130/couple in their own room, breakfasts included

o   9:00 pm Friday until lunchtime Sunday

-          10/4- Crossroads Beach Day

o   2:30 pm

o   Huntington City (not State) Beach

o   Cost: $5- Tickets available at Crossroads starting this Sunday, and I’ll have them next week at Fireside

Thoughts from the Word:

As we hurl headlong into the busy semester, make sure that involvement in a local church is (very, very) high on your list of priorities!  In order for this to happen, you’ll have to work hard (I promise that, when it’s all said and done, you will never look back and say, “Gee, I really regret absolutely spending myself serving the Lord in that church”) with purpose (“intent on one purpose” that is “so that we may present every man complete in Christ”); and remember that it takes the whole body diversely working in unified harmony to accomplish that purpose.

See you on Sunday…
